The Sopranos debuts on HBO.
The song "I'm Your Angel" by Celine Dion featuring R. Kelly is at the top of the singles charts.
The movie “A Civil Action” starring John Travolta is at the top of the box office.
Sports
The Denver Broncos beat the Jets in the AFC Championship and are headed to the Super Bowl. The Broncos’ two-point win against the Patriots was their 11th of the season decided by seven points or less to represent the most in NFL history.
Technology
Text messaging is becoming a thing.
Floppy disks are slowly not becoming a thing.
Meditations
The highlight of this week would surely have been about the Broncos going back to the Super Bowl!
We didn’t get HBO, so I never got into the The Sopranos when it first came out.
My recollection is that Thursday nights on NBC were a must-watch sequence that included Friends and ER.
I’ve never seen “A Civil Action” with Travolta and - oddly - I have no recollection of ever hearing “I’m Your Angel”. As of now, R. Kelly is incarcerated.
At this point, I would have been at least 6 months into my job doing tech support making $9/hour and saving up for…who knows what.
When not working in 1999, my free time after school was spent generating high-quality digital facsimiles of my drivers license using my dad’s photo scanner.
This becomes relevant later in the year.
